Description:

Tazumal preserved Mayan structures of considerable size and an archaeological museum with valuable relics of the time including highlights Xipe Totec.



Major archaeological excavations of El Salvador began in this place called Tazumal Chalchuapa located in the department of Santa Ana and 85 miles from the capital.

The findings suggest that most Tazumal site occupancy was about classical period.


The American archaeologist Stanley H. Dirió Bogss studies and excavations in the 1940s and bore fruit with several buried structures that can be seen to date.

From San Salvador, capital of El Salvador, driving 85 kilometers searching the border into Guatemala by CA1. After passing through Santa Ana continues to Chalchuapa in which road you will find clear and visible signs to the archaeological site.

If traveling from Guatemala to El Salvador to take the Border The Chinamas the CA8 and in this way reach Chalchuapa Abroad and then to reach the archaeological site.

Being a famous tourist destination and many visitors find that the route is well signposted and easy to get to the place. All accesses are properly paved and in good condition.
